Animas Canyon
On30 & On18 Rio Grande & Southern Railroad, NCE DCC controlled.
by Grampian Model Railroaders Inc.
Animas Canyon is based on the 3 foot Rio Grande & Southern Railroad, Colorado USA. , which opened in 1882 from Durango to Silverton serving the Mining Industry.
This section (Durango to Silverton) of railroad is the only section of Rio Grande & Southern Railroad line to remain open and in continual service till today, passing through the rugged San Juan Mountains, following the Animus River.
The Layout is factitious, Modelled in O scale. The layout scenery features a canyon typical of the Animas River. Layouts track was laid using Peco On30 track work and electro frog points for the 3 foot gauge and OO9 Peco points and SL400 Peco flex track for the On18 mine track. Layout runs a range of engines & rolling stock, some quite rare and some kit built.
Scenery is a combination of carved foam board and roofing Insolation Paper, finished with Cornice adhesive plaster, paint, soil, sticks, dried plants and scenic fibres mixtures.
Brian Comport of Trainworld Brighton, kindly donated a half built layout which he had salvaged. The Grampian Model Railroaders Members decided to start afresh building a new layout on a steel framework designed for Exhibition use, using some salvaged track, trestles and a mine structure adhering to as close as practical to the original plan.
Additional buildings have been either purchased or built by members of the Club.
